Summer School

FLEX Academy offers access to virtual courses anytime, anyplace, and at anyplace to meet every learner’s needs. FLEX Restore Classes provide students an opportunity to recover credit over the summer in a class that they have previously attempted and failed. Students who do not successfully complete these courses or fail to login daily may be dropped from the course. All courses follow the district’s curriculum at a glance and academic calendar for consistency and equity.

FLEX Ahead Summer School FLEX Restore Summer School
FLEX Academy offers access to virtual courses anytime, anyplace, and at any pace to meet every learner’s needs. FLEX Ahead Classes provide students an opportunity to take classes that they have not previously taken in a condensed summer timeline. Students must be highly motivated to complete FLEX Ahead courses as they are full-length courses and self-paced. Prior academic performance in the selected subject should be strongly considered when choosing to enroll in FLEX Ahead courses. All courses follow the district’s curriculum at a glance and academic calendar for consistency and equity.

  • Students are required to meet with their local school counselor to determine course needs and be registered for course(s).
  • Eligible Students: All high school students (grades 9th-12th) prepared to attempt a course at an accelerated pace may participate in FLEX Ahead Summer classes.
  • Priority: All eligible students (9th-12th) will be enrolled until cap is reached.
  • Cost: $250 per 0.5 Carnegie unit; $500 per 1.0 Carnegie unit
  • Courses Offered:

    • English: World Lit, American Lit
    • Math: Analytic Geometry, Advanced Algebra
    • Social Studies: Civics, World History
    • Science: Chemistry, Physics
  • 2.0 units maximum can be taken with FLEX Academy this summer.
  • Prior academic performance in the selected subject should be strongly considered when choosing to enroll in FLEX Ahead courses.
  • All course content and assessments will be accessible via VERGE and progress is monitored by DCSD teachers.
  • Students are required to attend orientation during the first two days of the course. Orientation will be available virtually and face to face.
  • All assessments are proctored. Proctoring will be available virtually and face to face.
  • It is recommended that students who are not making adequate progress (falling more than two days behind in course planner) report to their assigned FLEX site for further assistance.
  • Student support will consist of on-site assistance, virtual open instructional labs, and virtual guided tutorials.
  • On-Site Support Locations are Chamblee HS, Lakeside HS, Redan HS, Miller Grove HS, and Columbia HS (additional sites may be added based on enrollment). Students will be assigned a location by FLEX Academy based on parent preference.
NCAA: Athletes should not use FLEX as a summer school option due to NCAA regulations for approved coursework.
Registration: April 30, 2018-May 25, 2018
Withdrawal Deadline: June 4, 2018
Payment Information: Students and parents should visit the following website to make arrangements to pay for FLEX summer courses online: https://webstores.activenetwork.com/school-software/dekalb_online_academ/. Payments can also be made in person at our school offices (money orders/cashier’s checks ONLY) by appointment. Please call (678) 676-1190. During the week of May 29-June 5, 2018, we will accept payments at our school offices on a walk-in basis (no appointments needed).
Course Dates: May 30-June 27, 2018
EOC Testing Dates: June 25-28, 2018 (Test will be administered at home school.)

Transportation
No bus transportation will be provided. Students must transport themselves to face to face FLEX On-Site Locations.

Internet & Technology
Students must have access to an internet connected device with a webcam (required). Updated desktops, laptops, and Chromebooks are recommended.

Course Progress

  • Students are expected to submit assignments according to the course planner (1-2 per assignments per course per day).
  • FLEX tracks attendance through submission of assignments. Parents will be contacted at 1-Day and 2-Day absences.
  • Communication must be made with the FLEX Administration Office if student will be idle for an extended period.

Virtual Course Expectations

  • Students should plan to spend 3-5 hours per day per course on learning course content and completing assignments.
  • Guided Tutorials and Open Instructional Labs will be available to all students virtually via Adobe Connect.
  • Students must finish all coursework by June 27th at 1:00 pm.

  • Priority: Seniors (C/O 2018, Summer Graduates, 5th Year Seniors)

    • Priority will be given to seniors until May 24th.
    • All eligible students (9th-12th) will be enrolled until cap is reached.
  • Cost: $100 per 0.5 Carnegie unit; $200 per 1.0 Carnegie unit
  • Courses Offered:

    • English: Lit 9, World Lit, American Lit, British Lit
    • Math: Coordinate Algebra, Analytic Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Accelerated Coordinate Algebra/Analytic Geometry A, Accelerated GSE Analytic Geometry B/Advanced Algebra
    • Social Studies: Civics, World History, US History, Economics
    • Science: Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science
    • World Language: Spanish I, Spanish II, French I, French II
