Redan played host to a pair Region 5-3A basketball thrillers on Tuesday night as both the girls’ and boys’ game went down to the final shot in the final second.

The Redan Lady Raiders opened the night winning in exciting fashion as Sydney Brown’s short jumper from the baseline hit nothing but net as the clock ticked down to one second to play for a 49-47 victory.

Cedar Grove had knotted the game at 47 on a free throw by Antoniya Hicks with 31.2 seconds to play.

Redan called timeout with 6.8 seconds to play to set up the play for Brown. After the inbounds following the timeout, Brown found an opening about 10 feet from the basket along the left baseline and put the shot in for the game winner as time ran out.

The win kept Redan (10-3, 5-0) undefeated in Region 5-3A action while Cedar Grove (6-2, 4-1) suffered its first region loss.

Jayda Jackson hit eight consecutive points to start the game for Cedar Grove to take an early 8-0 lead before Redan came storming back to take an 11-10 lead on Taylor Teton’s second three-pointer of quarter as the period ended.

Redan continued its momentum to start the second quarter jumping out to a nine-point lead (19-10) behind threes from Brown and Jocelyn Small.

Jackson brought the Saints back scoring seven points in a 9-0 run to knot the game at 19 on her old fashioned three-point play with 4:25 to play in the half.

Kayla Sesberry hit a jumper with 1:47 left in the half to give Cedar Grove a 22-21 lead before Redan’s Small answered with an offensive put back as the half ended to put Redan ahead 23-22 at the half.

Redan had three-pointers by Kerrigan Johnson, Small and Teton in the third quarter to lead by as much as 5 on three separate occasions, the last at 37-32 on Teton’s three with 1:39 to play in the quarter.

Cedar Grove’s Leanna Ramos nailed a three-pointer in the final minute to trim the margin to 37-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

Cedar Grove pulled ahead 43-41 with 4:19 to play on a layup by Jackson as the game continued toward the exciting finish.

Jocelyn Small finished with 19 points and Sydney Brown had 10 to lead Redan in the win. Jayda Jackson finished with a game high 29 points for Cedar Grove while Leanna Ramos had 9 points and 8 rebounds to go with a 10-rebound performance by MiKaysha Lemon.

The boys’ game had a lot to live up to following the finish of the girls’ game and did so as Cedar Grove held on for a 46-44 win as Redan’s three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

Redan trailed by as much as 14 points early in the third period before getting on a roll at the end of the period and the beginning of the fourth to close the gap to two (36-34) with 6:37 to play.

Darius Howard’s steal and pass up the court to Tremayne Anderson for a layup started the run for Redan with 1:16 to play in the third period. Tyonn Stuckey hit a three with 32 seconds left in the quarter to close the gap to 35-28 heading into the final period of play.

Will Littles opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and with 6:37 to play Jibril Wyckoff nailed a three to cut the lead to 36-34.

Cedar Grove could not pull away as the Raiders kept pulling within two on three more occasions. Trailing 42-40 with 1:53 to play Wyckoff drove to the basket for a layup and was fouled. He hit the free throw for a short-lived 43-42 Redan lead.

The Saints quickly inbounded the ball to Devin Barnes who passed up the floor to a streaking Omar Davis for a dunk to regain the lead at 44-43. Following a Raider miss, Barnes drove to the basket to extend the lead to 46-43 with 52 seconds to play.

Stuckey hit one of two from the charity stripe with 46 seconds to play to make it a 46-44 game, but the Raiders would miss two more opportunities to tie the game while the Saints missed four consecutive free throws.

Following the misses, Redan got the ball inbounds and to midcourt with 2.9 seconds to play and called timeout to set up the final play. The ball came in to Wyckoff deep behind the three-point arc on the left side of the basket where he stepped up and came up just short on the game-winning attempt.

Cedar Grove took a 24-16 lead at the half as Blake Austin hit a three-pointer and Devin Barnes got inside for a layup during the final minute of the half.

The Saints (6-4, 5-0) continued the momentum coming out of half as Malik Johnson hit a three and Barnes drove to the basket for a 30-16 advantage with 6:23 left in the third.

Rebounding was a key factor in the game as the Saints held a 47-27 advantage over the Raiders who fell to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the region.

Barnes finished with 15 points to lead Cedar Grove while Omar Davis added 10 points and 9 rebounds and Jamari Dean had 9 points and 19 rebounds. Redan was led by Wyckoff with 13 points.
