The No. 10 ranked Lakeside Lady Vikings scored the only goal of the second half to defeat Mill Creek 2-1 on Wednesday night at Hallford Stadium and advance to the Class 6A girls’ soccer state playoffs quarterfinals.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the half with the Vikings’ score coming off a corner from Emma Gray that was put in the net by Tyler Smith.

Lakeside (15-1-2) kept pressing the Mill Creek (12-6-0) defense in the second half and broke through for the winning goal as Sarah Garner hit the game winner on an assist from Olivia Cohen.

The quarterfinal appearance set against No. 1 Lassiter is just the sixth time the Lady Vikings have advanced to the third round of the state playoffs and the first since advancing to the Class 4A quarterfinals (4-2 loss to Whitewater) in 2007.

The meeting with Lassiter set for Friday (time TBA) will be the second playoff meeting between the two programs and the first since a 2-0 Lassiter win in the 2004 Class 5A state playoffs.

Tyler Smith leads Lakeside with 25 goals on the season and Emma Gray has a team high 11 assists. Lena Schaefer (13 goals, 8 assists) and Olivia Cohen (12 goals, 5 assists) are two other weapons for Lakeside. Junior goalies Kenzie Killgallen and Miranda McNalley have combined to allow just 3 goals on the season as Lakeside put together a 15-1-2 record.

In other girls’ soccer state playoff action, No. 10 Dunwoody (11-5-1) lost a tough 1-0 decision to Richmond Hill (13-4-1) in Class 5A and No. 9 Chamblee (10-6-0) fell in a tight 2-1 Class 4A road game at Wayne County (10-5-0).

The No. 2 ranked Lakeside Vikings are the only team home this weekend as they host No. 4 Milton (14-3-1) at 7:30 pm on Friday at Hallford Stadium. It will be just the second playoff meeting between the two teams with Milton holding a 1-0 edge with a 5-1 victory in the 2001 Class 5A second round.

Lakeside is led by the sophomore duo of Saul Tinoco (27 goals, 19 assists) and Raul Tinoco (12 goals, 15 assists). Senior Max Wieder (18 goals, 9 assists) and Brad Gavrieldes (10 goals, 5 assists) and junior Jorge DeLeon (8 goals, 14 assists) are not to be overlooked. Junior goalie Alfonso Bautista has allowed just 8 goals in 1,375 minutes in goal and is 20-0-0.

The Class 4A No. 2 ranked Cross Keys Indians (15-2-1) are on a mission to return to the state title game in 2016 after a tough 1-0 loss to St. Pius in the championship game a year ago.

Cross Keys has to go through No. 7 Cairo (16-4-0) to reach the semifinals as they travel on Friday for a 5:00 pm game.

The Indians have a balanced scoring attack led by seniors Gilberto Ramos (14 goals, 16 assists) and Joseph Avellaneda (10 goals) and junior Christian Rodriguez (12 goals, 5 assists).

Junior goalies Ernest Perez and Eduardo Cabrera split most of the time in goal for the Indians and have allowed just 10 goals in 1,010 minutes in goal.
