Track athletes from DeKalb County performed well at recent region track championships qualifying 125 individuals and 35 relay teams for the State Sectionals on Saturday (May 2) while bringing home four region track titles.

Stephenson pulled off a sweep of the Region 6-5A Track Championships at Lakewood bringing home the boys’ and girls’ championship trophies.

The Jaguars knocked off Southwest DeKalb 111-101 in another tight track meet between the two programs for a second consecutive Region 6-5A title. Southwest DeKalb had won the DeKalb County Championship in a close finish a month earlier.

Denzel Harper led the charge for the Jaguars as a triple gold medal winner including the 110 meter hurdles (14.89), 300 meter hurdles (38.92) and the long jump (23-05.25) to account for 30 of the Jaguars points in the meet.

Southwest DeKalb had three individual first place finishes including Terry Conwell in the 400 meter dash (47.55), Tariq Bradford in the triple jump (45-06.00) and Montavious Coleman in the discus (158-00.50). The Panthers also picked up gold in the 4×400 meter relay.

Clarkston finished fifth overall in the standings behind double gold medal winner Abbas Abbkar (800, 1:54.46; 1600, 4:28.95) and Gidey Sahlu in the 3200 meter run (9:56.12).

Dunwoody was sixth led by Sam Haas with a gold in the pole vault (9-06.00).

The Lady Jaguars knocked off defending region champ and state champ Miller Grove 120-91 with a deep team which won three gold medals.

Davion Wingate was the high jump winner (5-00.00) while finishing second in both the 100M (12.21) and 200M (25.09) and Simone Harper won the long jump (18-02.25). Stephenson’s other win came in the 4×100 relay (49.07).

Alexia King brought home a pair of gold medals for Miller Grove winning the 400 meter dash (57.72) and 300 hurdles (44.60) to lead the Lady Wolverines. Miller Grove’s 4×400 relay (4:59.60) also captured gold.

Dunwoody gave a run at the region title as well with three gold medals in the meet. Ansley Heavern captured a pair of gold medals by winning the 1600 (5:23.64) and 3200 (12:00.15) meter runs. Amy Last picked up the third gold for Dunwoody by winning the pole vault (9-00.00).

The top four qualifiers from the region meets advance to Saturday’s State Sectional B at Loganville (GA) set for a 10:30 am start.

Region 6-4A
The Redan Lady Raiders piled up 151 points behind five gold medal performances to defeat Marist (142) and Chamblee (136) for the Region 6-4A girls’ title at Lakewood.

Shequilla McClain accounted for two of the gold medals with a sweep of the 100 (14.53) and 300 (44.42) meter hurdle events. Promise Clark added a gold in the triple jump (37-05.50) and a silver in the 400 meter dash.

Redan also swept the two relay events with wins in the 4×100 (47.77) and 4×400 (3:51.65).

Chamblee picked up four gold medals as Venida Fagan and Rachel Edler each won two gold medals. Fagan captured the 100 (12.19) and 200 (24.94) meter dash titles for her two gold medals. Edler excelled on the field events with wins in the high jump (5-00.00) and long jump (18-04.50).

There was no region title on the boys’ side, but the DeKalb entries captured 10 gold medals while Redan finished third (90) and Arabia Mountain tied for fourth (88) with Marist behind Grady 118 and St. Pius 104.

Redan’s third place finish was fueled by senior Chris McBride’s triple gold medal performance. McBride won the 300 hurdles (39.46), long jump (22-09.50) and triple jump (45-08.50).  Eddie Mathis also won gold for the Raiders in the 110 hurdles (15.33).

Arabia Mountain picked up gold medals in the 400 meter dash by Quincey Wilson (49.17) and in the 4×400 relay (3:20.46) to boost their fourth place finish.

Columbia’s sixth place finish was aided by wins from Antonio Manson in the 100 meter dash (10.85) and the 4×100 relay (42.38).

Lithonia brought home a gold medal in the 200 meter dash by Jozahn Carter (22.09) and Chamblee’s Will West captured gold in the pole vault (12-06.00) along with a silver in the 110 hurdles (15.65) and bronze in the 300 meter hurdles (40.89).

The top four qualifiers from the region meets advance to Saturday’s State Sectional B at Eagle’s Landing (McDonough, GA) set for a 10:30 am start.

Region 4-3A
The Cedar Grove Saints blew away the competition in the Region 4-3A Championships by 54 points with 151 total points to 97 by Blessed Trinity.

Darius Freeman and Johnny Thomas both contributed a pair of gold medal victories in the Saints big victory. Freeman won the 200 (21.48) and 400 (49.14) meter dashes and Thomas came up big in the shot put (46-09.00) and discus (136-01.25).

Freshman Isreal Spivey gave Cedar Grove a clean sweep of the sprint events by taking the 100 (10.74) dash title. Chris Frederick won the high jump (6-00.00) and Joseph Comer took gold in the long jump (21-03.00) as the Saints dominated the meet.

The Saints also pulled out the gold medal in the 4×100 relay (42.09) to aid the cause.

McNair finished fifth overall with 57 points, but qualified several for the state sectional including the gold medal winning 4×400 relay team (3:20.76).

Towers was eighth overall led by a gold medal victory by Zacchaeus Jewell in the Triple Jump (45-02.00).

The Cedar Grove Lady Saints qualified in five individual events on the way to a fifth place finish in the Region 4-3A Girls’ Championships. Cedar Grove was led by Amani Taylor who picked up a gold medal in the discus (112-08.00) and a bronze in the shot put (34-05.00) to qualify for sectionals.

Region 2-6A
The Lakeside Vikings won three gold medals at the Region 2-6A Championships and finished third overall with 98 points behind Rockdale County (152) and Newton (143).

Davis Stockwell led the Vikings by sweeping the 1600 (4:39.33) and 3200 (9:42.22) meter runs to pick up a pair of gold medals. Bart Pruett aided the cause for Lakeside by winning the pole vault (10-09.00).

Joshua Vann had a pair of bronze medal performances in the high jump and long jump to lead the Tucker Tigers to a fourth place finish with 79.50 points.

The girls’ title went to Newton with 147 points followed by Rockdale County 127, Lovejoy 104.50, Lakeside 96, Tucker 81 and Alcovy 57.50.

The DeKalb entries still performed well as Lakeside and Tucker combined for eight gold medals.

Lakeside picked up a pair of wins from Corrie Smith as she swept the 1600 (5:34.28) and 3200 (11:59.63) meter runs to account for two of the team’s six gold medals.

Jordyn Sak won the pole vault (8-00.00), Raven Smith the triple jump (37-04.00), Taj Rasheed the high jump (4-10.00) and Sarah Melendez the discus (101-09.00) to round out the Lady Vikings’ gold medal haul.

Kiera Washington was a double gold medal winner for Tucker bringing home the 800 meter run (2:24.38) and 400 meter dash (58.21) prizes.
